For me there is nothing quite like a beach on the Indian ocean, warm tropical seas, coconut palms swaying in the breeze and consistent temperatures day and night. Bali not only has these three key elements, but it also has the world-famous surf breaks and spectacular coral reefs.
For surfers
the list is endless with Bingin, Balangan, Uluwatu, Padang Padang to the south, Serangan and Baby reef, Hyatt Reef in Sanur, Airport reef in Jimbaran, Old Man’s in Canggu, Jasri on the East Coast, Medewi on the West Coast and where is all started in the 1970’s, Kuta beach. Describe by some as the mecca for warm water surfing Bali has everything to offer every surfer all year round.
Try the ever popular stand up paddle surfing. When the trade winds pick up in June, July & August, you can try Kite surfing off Sanur beach.
For sun lovers
my favourite spot for people watching must be Legian beach. Banter with the beach hawkers, have a pedicure on your sun lounger whilst eating a hand cut pineapple for bargain prices.
For swimmers
the best spots are to be found at Jimbaran bay, where you can finish your day with a BBQ fish dinner. Or try the more laid-back Virgin or White Sand beach up the East Coast, a gorgeous bay with some basic local restaurants, from which you can rent a chair.
For dolphin lovers
a must do is the early morning boat trip from Lovina. You’ll be in the boat as the sun rises and follow the dolphins as they come into the bay to catch their breakfast.
For snorkelers and divers
try the spots in Sanur, Ahmed, Tulamben or head up to Pemuteran and Menjangan. Or take a day trip to Nusa Penida or Lembongan. You’ll be mesmerised by the colourful coral gardens and the numerous fish who call them home.
For the beach bar lover
try Finns Beach Club in Canggu, Sundays on the Bukit or Arthotel Beach Club in Sanur, mellow sounds, cold drinks and good food.
For kids
Sanur has a natural reef that stops the larger waves hitting the shore. At low tide walk out to the reef with the water just up to ankle level.
